In Bali and Indonesia’s rural corners, mental illness is not only misunderstood - it is grossly mistreated.

In an old, rudimentary method, families and communities deal with the mentally ill an almost medieval practice called ‘pasung’ - effectively imprisoning them for life.

Rudi Waisnawa is an Indonesian photographer who has dedicated his art form to documenting and raising awareness for oppressive practice.

He hopes that his eye-opening photographs will force people not to look away. And it’s working.
