I CREATE... Negatives Into Magic | (Lab)rana's Analog Photographer Edward Christian

Edward loves rolls.

Specifically, the ones your camera smokes up.

And rightly so... Your dusty 35mm is a magic box that can print an altered reality.

From 8 years old with his dad’s camera, he learned how to shed light on the film with the wand of his intuition:

“You never know what you get before printing… You can’t capture hundreds of pictures to find your best take, so you have to frame one and make it the best.”

An art of the first try, with no magic stick.

He compares analogue photography to a mountain breeze, when digital is the clinic’s sterile air. Rich Stapleton’s shots, one of his models, lets you feel this analogy as if the wind was in your hair.

Influenced by the Japanese Hideaki Hamada, his hunting ground remains street photography.

After taking infinite frames of inedible food for 8 years as a professional photographer, it was time to move back to basics. With a group of friends sharing the same passion, he started a film enthusiasts community in Jakarta. It became a developing lab 3 years ago: (lab)rana was born.

Gambling on everyone’s locked down inhibited creative impulse, they opened a branch in June here in Bali, the photo destination. And guess where it is? Right next our doorstep!

The pandemic gives the luck to get rare clichés of balinese streets and beaches, unjammed and forsaken. So get out there and take the chance to make unique frames of a muted island.
